Disobeying the Elder's orders, the Stalkers journey through the Forbidden City, where they find the Nova Sect and their leader, Plutonia, attempting to break into Eden. The Stalkers are able to eliminate the Nova Sect and kill Plutonia, and Eden's gates mysteriously open for them. The Stalkers enter Eden and explore the facility, discovering that the Ancients were experimenting with creating mutants before the project was shut down. They are then shocked to find out that the Elder himself was one of the scientists in charge of the experiments, and they remember how he smuggled them to safety to prevent them from being destroyed. At that moment the radio activates and they hear a voice calling for \"Command Center Sweden.\"
Mutant Year Zero has a great blend of sardonic humour, grim detail and cartoon excess, a balance inherited from its venerable pen-and-paper RPG source, Mutant. Or, more specifically, its 2014 update, in which players take the role of mutant Stalkers wandering The Zone years after an environmental catastrophe, plague and a nuclear war has hit.
The star of Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is the world building. Things look and feel great as you walk through the lush post-apocalyptic forests and explore bombed out schools and pizza parlors. Set just a few generations after the world met its end at the hands of climate change, plague and war, there are still a lot of remnants from that age out in the world for you to discover. This also makes it very obvious that the setting is a future Sweden, northeast of the city of Gothenburg to be more precise. It is nothing you will actually notice unless you are able to read Swedish, but I had a great deal of fun puzzling out where exactly we were walking around by looking at old road signs and notations on the map that are written in Swedish.
The game is coming to PC, Xbox One and PS4 sometime this year, and it looks fantastic. A post-apocalyptic future, anthropomorphic mutants, and XCOM style gameplay with stealth components all combine to make this one of the coolest-looking upcoming games out there. It's right up my alley as far as I can tell. 59ce067264
